Road King parts: one code, four years that matter

About 2,100 Road Kings are taxed in the UK and 1,560 more are on SORN. The plain bike was one code, FLHR, from 1994 to 2022; four year lines inside that run decide what fits.

The four year lines

  • 2008. Throttle-by-wire and Brembo brakes: 92 per cent carries, but all 21 grips, both handlebars, the lever kits and most brake rotors swap, and no grip fits both a 2007 and a 2008.
  • 2009. The new frame. 98 per cent carries, but every genuine wheel, luggage rack, solo seat and pillion starts here.
  • 2014. Project Rushmore, 258 new parts: all 21 Tour-Paks, the saddlebag guards, rails and speaker lids, 11 two-up seats, six handlebars and 13 wheels.
  • 2017. Milwaukee-Eight. 101 parts drop, all engine dress-up and Screamin’ Eagle. Nothing in bags, seats, screens or racks changes.

Every other year carries 98 to 100 per cent.

The screens are the Road King’s own

The same three detachable windshields, the 20-inch 57400380, 18-inch 57400381 and 16-inch 57400383, are listed for every Road King from 1994 to 2022, Classic and Special included, and for no other Harley. Add the deflectors 57357-07 and 58163-02, the Wind Splitter 57400176 and the panes 58195-94 and 58433-96, and nine of the 16 genuine screen parts fit only a Road King. A Special ships without a screen and needs docking kit 58221-04 under any of them.

Racks, sissy bars and Tour-Paks: the docking kit first

Uprights and luggage racks need the docking kit under them, and their listings never say so. By year:

  • 1997–2008: kit 53803-06 or 53804-06, then upright 52723-06A or 52933-97C, or Tour-Pak rack 53276-04A.
  • 2009–2013: 4-Point kit 54205-09B or 54246-09B, then uprights 52610-09A, 52627-09A, 54247-09A or 54248-09A, any of the eight racks, or Tour-Pak rack 53276-09B.
  • 2014–2022: 4-Point kit 52300353 or 52300354, the same uprights and racks, and Tour-Pak racks 53000221, 53000459 or the solo 53000225 for the 21 Tour-Paks.

The kits are under docking hardware, the uprights under sissy bars. The rider backrest mount is by year too: 52587-09 to 2008, 52589-09B from 2009; the adjustable pads take 52593-09A, then 52596-09A.

A 1994–2008 bike

No genuine wheel, luggage rack, solo seat, pillion or Tour-Pak is listed for it, and a 1994–95 bike has no genuine grip or handlebar. What it has is the screens, the 1997–2008 docking kits, uprights and Tour-Pak rack listed above, and four two-up seats. The choice is aftermarket: 365 two-up seats and 799 handlebars against 24 and 15 genuine.

Close relatives

In the parts book the Road King Classic is a Road King, 1,229 of its 1,232 genuine parts fitting the FLHR, and so is the Road King Special, the only code listed for 2023 to 2025: 1,006 of its 1,013 across 2017 to 2022, every screen, seat, wheel and Tour-Pak included. All 249 Police Road King parts fit a Road King, and the Electra Glide Standard and Street Glide each share 94 per cent of its 1,281.
