Choose the suspension and its installation parts

Front fork cartridges, a rear shock and reservoir mounting hardware perform different jobs. Start with the end of the motorcycle you want to change, then match the year, fork design and existing adjustment equipment.

This all-years selection brings earlier and later Softail applications together. The shock in the film is 54000384 for the listed 2025-on applications; it does not make that part suitable for an earlier bike.

Match the rear shock to the model year

The current catalogue separates 54000384 for 2025-on Softails from 54000325 for 2018–2024 Softails. Both descriptions specify tool-free preload, compression and rebound adjustment, a 46 mm piston and serviceability through Öhlins. Preload accounts for rider, passenger and luggage weight; damping adjustments then tune the response. Choose by the exact application before comparing the shared features.

An installation kit is separate from the shock

Installation kit 54000321 is listed for 2018–2024 Softails without factory external remote preload adjustment. The 54000325 requirements call for it when the bike lacks the preload-adjuster side cover. It supplies the installation solution for that condition; it is not a second shock or an automatic requirement for every year.

Choose cartridges for the fork already fitted

Kit 45400355 is for the specified inverted forks; 45400356 is for conventional forks. Both include left and right cartridges, springs and oil, with compression adjustment on the left and rebound on the right. Installation tools are separate, and Harley-Davidson recommends dealer installation because specialist tools are required. A cartridge kit changes the internals of the existing fork; it is not a complete replacement fork assembly.
