Iron 883 parts: one bike, twelve years

About 2,650 Iron 883s are taxed in the UK, nearly 2,000 more are on SORN, and none has been sold new here since the 2020 model: the air-cooled Sportster was never updated for Euro 5. The 2021 and 2022 in the year picker are US model years; a UK Iron 883 is 2009 to 2020.

2014 is the only line, and it catches service parts

Most Harleys have a year that splits the parts book. The Iron 883 doesn’t: 430 to 453 live genuine parts every year from 2009 to 2020, and the only step is 2014, when 412 of 430 carry over. What changes is what you re-order: rear brake pads 42029-07 to 41300053, air filter 29331-04 to 29400015, passenger footpeg kit 50203-04 to 50500270, and a different set of genuine front rotors either side. A UK bike takes the 70900100C digital speedo, not the US-model 70900475; both are listed.

Seats: the 2009 bike is the odd one out

Nearly every genuine seat we list starts at 2010: Sundowner 52000203, Super Reach 52000207 and Badlander 52000211A. A 2009 bike gets one live genuine solo seat, the Reduced Reach 51737-07, which on an XL883N also needs retention washer 7487. One part fits the Iron 883 and no other air-cooled Sportster: Passenger Pillion 52400127, 2016 on, for the stock solo seat. Without pillion pegs it also needs Passenger Footpeg Kit 50500270, so check footpegs first.

Bags: the one that doesn’t fit a UK bike

Rigid Leather Locking Saddlebags 90201321 show as fitting every Iron 883, but Harley excludes the “International” XL883N, which a UK bike is, so we’d steer you off them. That leaves throw-over saddlebags 90201770 on Saddlebag Supports 90201433, or the Single-Sided Swingarm Bag 90201326A, solo seat only with the passenger pegs off. The supports won’t go on with H-D Detachables, so decide on a sissy bar first: sideplates 52710-07A or 53913-04A need docking kit 53529-04 under them, and a rack only fits over the sideplates.

Making it a 1200

The 883-to-1200 conversion is genuine Harley and listed for every year: Screamin’ Eagle kits 30003-10 and 29784-07, the second with a Stage I air cleaner and 1200 heads, or cylinders 16954-02A (two needed) with piston kits 22698-01A or 22700-01A. Only the 883 codes get them, under big bore kits.

Close relatives

The Forty-Eight is almost the same bike in the parts book: 462 of the 481 genuine parts we list for the Iron 883 fit it. They part at the front: the Iron runs a 100/90B19 Scorcher, 43258-07B, the Forty-Eight a 130/90B16, 55035-11A, and all three genuine windscreens for the Iron are excluded from the Forty-Eight by name. The Iron 1200 shares the clip-on bracket 70900661 with it and nothing else does; the SuperLow takes 475 of the 481. The Nightster and Sportster S share the name and 167 parts, all oil, cleaners, locks and chargers: no seat, bar, mirror, light, brake, bag or screen crosses.
