The oil pump is the component that delivers pressurised oil to every bearing surface in the engine and returns used oil from the sump to the oil tank — an inadequate or worn pump causes starvation at the extremes of the lubrication circuit, which on a Harley-Davidson V-twin means the top end suffers first.
