Chrome struggles in UK use — road salt and persistent wet weather attack the plating, especially in crevices around the heel and toe pivots. DS chrome is mid-tier on coating quality; it's presentable but needs regular cleaning and protection to last more than a couple of seasons. For UK roads specifically, black powder-coat or satin black finishes generally outlast chrome regardless of brand.

Dyna (2006 to 2017) mid-controls are the most commonly adapted set for pre-2018 M8 Softail frames, with the 2012 to 2017 Wide Glide setup being the most-used variant. The frame mounting points differ, so a bracket modification or a specific conversion kit is needed. For 2018-and-later M8 Softails the geometry changes are more significant; purpose-built M8 mid-controls are the cleaner path.

Most Softail and Dyna models have forward-control conversion kits that bolt to the frame without welding. The main constraints are brake line length and clutch cable reach — most kits supply extended lines as part of the set, so check what's included before buying them separately. Touring models already run mid or floorboard setups and the conversion is far less common.
