S&S valve guides give Harley-Davidson engine builders the precision-machined bronze or iron guides needed to maintain correct valve stem alignment and sealing in cylinder heads being rebuilt or upgraded. The valve guide controls the lateral position of the valve stem throughout the full lift cycle — a worn guide allows the stem to rock, causing the valve face to close off-centre from the seat, which leads to combustion gas leakage, valve burning and oil entering the combustion chamber past the valve stem seal. S&S produce their valve guides to the dimensional and material specifications required for Harley-Davidson Big Twin and Sportster cylinder heads, with inside diameter finished to the correct stem clearance for the application. Both intake and exhaust guides are available, with exhaust guides often produced from a harder material grade to withstand the higher temperatures on the exhaust side of the combustion chamber.
