Harley-Davidson grips and mirrors: watch and compare

Regular grips, heated grips and mirrors solve different questions. Use the films to compare the details, then check the exact product application and complete installation requirements.

Compare Carbide, Redline and black Switchback

Carbide combines machined details and rubber contact surfaces; Redline uses open shapes and raised cleats with optional rubber inserts; black Switchback brings pronounced texture and rubber contact areas. These complete films also explain the wider collections. The links below and matching results contain only the actual products in this category. Other collection members, including brake-pedal pads and decorative covers, belong to their own categories.

Coordinating the Carbide collection

The Carbide Collection uses forged billet aluminium with either bright chrome or black anodising and machined highlights. Its slashed detailing carries through the rider and passenger foot supports, hand controls and smaller trim pieces. Black rubber contact surfaces on the boards and pegs are intended to give a positive grip. These are separately chosen accessories: the film’s complete collection is not one kit, and the products linked below are the members matched to this category.

For passengers, the film compares footboards with footpegs, alongside matching rider footboards. The passenger-board variants matter: 50503325 and 50503326 require the listed passenger-footboard support and explicitly exclude Trikes. The 2026-on Trike passenger boards are 50503327 and 50503328. A similar appearance does not make those versions interchangeable.

For a stretched-out riding position, the film pairs highway pegs with separate engine-guard mounts. Mounts 50503333 in black and 50503334 in chrome are supplied as a pair with necessary mounting hardware, for the specified 2024-on models with 1.25-inch engine guards. The footpegs are sold separately. Choose both the correct mount and the appropriate pegs rather than assuming the pictured assembly is included in either listing.

The separate Carbide heated grips have high, medium and low settings with thermostatic control to maintain the selected temperature. A flexible PCB heating element distributes heat, with independent temperature sensing and control for the left and right grips. Settings are controlled by the left-grip button or touchscreen and indicated on the motorcycle display. The grips are sold as a pair. Their exact fitment excludes FXBB and FXBR, so seeing this collection on a Breakout footboard page does not make its heated grips suitable for that bike. Some 2024 Street Glide and Road Glide installations may need a dealer Digital Technician update.

A matching brake-pedal pad and shifter peg complete the control-area treatment, both with rubber contact surfaces. Heating belongs to the heated grips, and included mounting hardware depends on the specific item. Use the category’s actual product links to choose the relevant accessory and check its finish, motorcycle and fitting requirements before combining pieces.

Choosing the Redline look

Redline brings together precision-machined, forged aluminium pieces in red, blue and black anodised finishes. Those colours describe the collection; each linked product has its own finish and fitment. The rider, passenger and highway pegs and rider footboards have open shapes, raised edges and cleats that H-D describes as gripping boot soles. Optional black rubber Comfort Inserts change their look and feel: 50503139 fits Redline rider footboards, while 50503140 fits Redline rider, passenger or highway pegs. Both insert sets are separate purchases, supplied as pairs, with retaining tabs rather than fitting tools or fasteners.

The hand grips use an anodised aluminium body with rubber contact surfaces. Their glueless design allows removal for servicing without damage, according to the exact listing; that feature belongs to the grips rather than the decorative covers. The brake-pedal pads come in small and large versions with a forged aluminium body and black rubber centre. The matching shifter peg adds tapered ends and a machined bevel, so the controls carry the same design without being interchangeable parts.

The derby cover, timer cover and fuel cap use curved machined spokes with a central Bar & Shield motif. These are appearance details, not engine-performance upgrades. The film shows the collection together, while the links here identify the actual pieces in this category. Choose the correct part, size and finish for the bike, and check any required mounts or separate inserts; a shared Redline name does not establish common fitment or included accessories.

Choosing black Switchback accessories

This film presents the black anodised Switchback Collection. Forged billet aluminium, pronounced knurling and rubber contact surfaces give the controls and foot supports their textured character. H-D describes the pieces as lightweight additions, without quoting a weight saving. The black anodising protects the exposed aluminium, while the knurled and rubber areas are intended to provide a secure-feeling contact surface. Those contact features do not belong to every decorative cover.

The collection includes regular hand grips and a separate heated-grip option, rider and passenger footpegs, footboards, mirrors, brake-pedal pads, shifter pegs, derby covers and timer covers. They share a visual treatment, but not one fitment or function. In particular, regular grips 56100564 and heated grips 56100574 have model restrictions including FXBB and FXBR exclusions; a Switchback film on a Breakout trim category does not override those restrictions.

Check the exact member’s fitting parts as well as its finish. Rider footboards 50502476 reuse the original hardware, which is not supplied with them. Mirrors 56000343 include the left and right mirrors and mounting hardware, but some motorcycles need the specified fairing plugs. The actual products in this category are linked below. The black-collection film does not establish the finish or suitability of clear-anodised or other same-name variants.

Choose the control change you actually need

Separate grip texture from grip heating

Redline combines anodised aluminium and rubber with a glueless grip design. Switchback offers distinct regular and heated references, while Carbide has three regulated heat settings and separate temperature control for each side. Choose the feature by part number. The Carbide product linked here is 56100972 in black; the film does not qualify another finish or motorcycle application.

Check the motorcycle and installation

A shared collection name does not establish the throttle, electrical or mounting compatibility of the grips. Read the exact model and year restrictions and any additional parts or software requirements. The reviewed Carbide and Switchback grip applications exclude FXBB and FXBR. Heating belongs to the heated grips, not to every matching accessory.

Finish the mirrors and plan the wider job

Switchback mirrors 56000343 include both mirrors and mounting hardware; the specified motorcycles also need separate fairing plugs. Their black anodised finish coordinates with the black collection. A handlebar or riser change is a separate job: check the exact dimensions, control layout and installation instructions before choosing cable, hose or wiring parts. The bar-swap guide below retains the wider shopping links.

Bar swaps done once, not twice

Nearly every problem in a handlebar job is discovered halfway through it. All of them are checkable before you order — here is the pre-flight list, in the order the mistakes usually happen.

Cable bike or throttle-by-wire? Settle it first

The map: Touring models are throttle-by-wire from 2008; the M8 Softails (2018-on) and the Revolution Max bikes are TBW; Dynas were cable to the end of the line, and the Evo Sportster was cable to 2022. It changes the whole shopping list — a cable bike going to taller bars needs extended throttle, clutch and idle cables plus a longer front brake line, while a TBW bike needs no throttle cables at all, just wiring extensions and the brake line. It also gates the grips: cable bikes take dual-cable throttle-sleeve grips, TBW bikes take grips made for the sensor tube, and cross-buying is the single most common grip return.

The ape-hanger arithmetic

Stock cables tolerate a modest rise; genuinely tall bars need everything longer, and the tidy answer is a height-matched cable-and-line kit — sold by bar height, so measure the bars, not the vibe. Barnett dominates our cable stock (more than 800 lines) partly because of how cables are bought: measured housing ferrule-to-ferrule, excluding the free wire. For a custom routing, run a piece of string along the intended path first; it is the oldest trick in the book because it works.

Wiring is the half of the job people forget to price. Switch wires either extend (solder or pre-made extension harnesses, sold per year range) or, on many 2014-on Touring bikes, the connectors are small enough to fish through the bars. Either way, internally-wired bars must be drilled or dimpled for it — check the listing.

The small stuff that decides whether it wobbles

Measure the clamp area: most Harley bars are 1 inch where the risers grip, fat-bar setups run 1-1/4 inch, and the two do not mix without matching risers — measure the bike, because model folklore is wrong often enough to cost postage. While you are there, look at the riser bushings: bars that knock out of line over bumps are collapsed rubber bushings, a few pounds to fix. And on mirrors: genuine Harley mirror threads are 5/16-24; a lot of imported aftermarket stock is metric M8 — close enough to start threading, wrong enough to wobble forever. If a mirror will not stay put, check the thread before blaming the ball joint.

Bar-job pre-flight checks

Check before orderingWhy it mattersWhat to buy
Throttle: cables at the grip, or none? TBW (Touring 2008+, M8 Softail, Rev Max) needs harnesses, not cables Cable kit or TBW parts — never both
Bar rise vs stock, in inches Cable/line kits are sold by height band Height-matched ape kit incl. brake line
Clamp diameter: 1" or 1-1/4"? Bars and risers must match exactly Matching risers if changing standard
Internal wiring wanted? Needs drilled/dimpled bars + wire extensions or fishable plugs Drilled bars + extension harness for your year
Clutch drags or throttle revs at full lock after the swap Cables too short or routed tight Longer cables and re-route — do not ride it like that
