This MCS spring for the primary chain tensioner is designed for 1979 to 1985 XL Sportster models and is a direct replacement for OEM 40019-80A. This spring provides the necessary force to keep the tensioner shoe against the chain, preventing slack that can lead to poor shifting and internal damage. In the shop, we often find these springs have lost their temper or snapped after years of heat cycles. Replacing it is a low-cost way to ensure your Ironhead or early Evo Sportster stays reliable.
