Setting up your valvetrain correctly is vital for engine longevity, and the JIMS tappet adjustment tool is the right way to check hydraulic tappet free play. By inserting the tip under the hydraulic unit retaining clip and above the pushrod seat, you can quickly determine if the tappet is adjusted properly. If the tool doesn't fit or if you feel up and down play, you know the adjustment is off. This tool fits 1984 to 2022 Big Twins, 1986 to 2022 Sportsters, 2008 to 2012 XR1200, and 2000 to 2010 Buell XB models. Note that it is not for use with solid lifters or Hydrosolids.
