1–48 von 8.404 FASTENERS
Fasteners are the least glamorous section of the shop and the one that ends the most Sunday jobs early. Five rules cover almost everything that goes wrong.
Every traditional Harley platform — Sportster, Dyna, Softail, Touring, from Knucklehead to Milwaukee-Eight — is built on Unified inch threads: 1/4-20, 5/16-18, 3/8-16 and their fine-pitch cousins. The metric roll every garage owns is the wrong roll. The exceptions: brake components and some electrics have always smuggled in metric, and the Revolution Max bikes (Pan America, Sportster S, Nightster) are metric and Torx throughout — a different hardware universe, so check which side of that line your bike sits on before ordering bolts or nuts by the bag.
Harley mixes inch-pound and foot-pound torque specs, and the single most common self-inflicted injury on these bikes is applying foot-pound instinct to an inch-pound fastener. The famous victim is the derby cover: small Torx screws (T27 — not the T25 that almost fits) going into aluminium primary-cover threads on a spec of well under ten foot-pounds. Strip those threads and a fluid change becomes a machining job. An inch-pound torque wrench costs less than one helicoil repair, and anti-seize — not threadlocker — is what those screws want.
Torque-to-yield fasteners — the compensator bolt is the one most riders meet — stretch permanently when torqued and deliver less clamp the second time. Any spec written as "torque, then a further angle" is the tell: buy the new bolt. Rotor bolts come with a pre-applied locking patch that only works once — reuse means fresh threadlocker, fitted in a cross pattern. And the clutch hub nut on Big Twins and Sportsters is left-hand thread; every season someone shears one off turning it the "right" way.
On threadlocker generally, the shop map is: blue on things you service (caliper bolts), red on things that must never move (exhaust studs — which back out otherwise, then wallow the head threads), and none-plus-anti-seize on the derby. Red needs serious heat to release; do not use it anywhere you plan to visit again.
The two big names here solve opposite problems. Colony makes hardware that looks like 1948 because it is made to the 1948 drawing — Parkerized and cadmium-style finishes, correct head forms, kits per assembly for Knuckle, Pan and Shovel restorations where a modern polished cap head is instantly wrong. Gardner-Westcott — the deepest stock in this section — is the other direction: polished stainless and show chrome engine and chassis kits that replace corroded factory hardware a whole assembly at a time. Chrome eventually rusts on a bike that sees weather; stainless does not, which is the quiet argument for it on anything ridden through a British winter.
And the truth of what sells: the single genuine Harley Torx screw and washer, bought to replace the one that went "ping" into the gravel. That is what this section is for. Assortment trays exist so it only happens to you once.
| The trap | Why it happens | The right move |
|---|---|---|
| Stripped derby cover screws or threads | T25 in a T27 head, or foot-pounds on an inch-pound spec | Proper T27, inch-pound wrench, anti-seize; replacement screw kits in stock |
| Exhaust studs loose, then snapped | Flange fasteners vibrate loose; a loose stud wallows the head | Red threadlocker on studs, locking flange nuts, thread-repair insert if it got that far |
| Compensator loosens again after the repair | Torque-to-yield bolt reused | New bolt every time — the spec-with-an-angle is the giveaway |
| Clutch hub nut sheared | Left-hand thread turned the intuitive way | It undoes clockwise — read before you heave |
| Metric spanners nearly-but-not-quite fit everything | Traditional Harleys are inch/SAE hardware | USA-size hardware and SAE tools — unless it is a Rev Max, which is all metric |
