Start with SAE — and an inch-pound torque wrench

A traditional Harley (Sportster through Milwaukee-Eight) is built on inch hardware, so the base kit is SAE sockets, inch hex keys and a full Torx set — including the T27 that cheaper sets skip, which happens to be the derby cover screw on millions of Big Twins. The tool that saves the most money in this section is the least exciting: an inch-pound torque wrench. Harley mixes inch-pound and foot-pound specs, and stripped primary-cover threads — a foot-pound instinct applied to an inch-pound screw — are what happens when nobody owns one.

The Jims tier: tools that gate whole jobs

Jims builds the factory-level service tools, and their catalogue splits by year for a reason: the Twin Cam inner cam bearing tool for 1999–2006 engines is not the 2007–2017 tool, and the Milwaukee-Eight needs its own again. That bearing is the non-negotiable — it is a caged needle bearing sitting in a blind hole, and improvised removal drops rollers into the crankcase. If a cam or tensioner job is on your bench, the collet-style remover and installer are the two tools to price in before the parts.

Same logic on the clutch: Big Twin diaphragm clutches need a spring compressor to get the pressure plate off safely, the hub nut behind it is left-hand thread, and a primary locking bar stops the drivetrain turning while you heave. None of these are expensive; all of them are the difference between a Saturday job and a recovery mission. Check the service manual's special-tool list before starting anything inside the engine or primary — buying the right puller is always cheaper than drilling out what the wrong one broke.

What actually tops the sales chart

For all the specialist iron above, the most-bought items in this section are Acebikes ratchet straps and tie-downs — because before anyone services a Harley, they have to move it.
